Amazement at the Information Swirling Around Myself
As I was walking to school one day, listening to a portion of my mp3 collection the word information popped inside my head. I usually end up negotiating ideas in my head while waking up and sleepwalking to school, so this topic wasn?t a surprise. However, it was the vast quantity of information that surrounded me. Not information as in the traditional sense, images and the scenery that was entering my eyes, but the data that surrounded me. I was carrying an mp3cd player with me, so that?s 700mb of information stored in my pocket, a small USB disk resided in my other pocket, so 64mb there; a nice 32kb in my graphics calculator behind me in my backpack, and perhaps a few hundred kilobytes in my mobile phone, full of information. So that?s 764.324mb of information, or rather 6,411,616,256 separate on or off signals (I think) held on small devices on me.
With that I have a sky digital satellite beaming down three hundred channels at approximately 2mbit/s per channel that?s a hell of a lot of data being beamed onto my spiky hair. Not to mention all sorts of other satellite, and all the cable communications beneath my feet. All the radio signals, mobile phone signals (which are radio signals) my cordless headphones attempting to transmit their precious signal as far as legally possible.
So much information circling myself, and they wonder why we are getting cancer when we have all this excess radiation bombarding us.
On another note, in reply to MadMan?s recent post about a customised information page like I have on my section of the site, let me just say that I am currently looking into it, but it will probably go together with a major overhaul of the backend of this website, or a minor one from your point of view.
